On Mourning

30 January

The Khoj International Artists’ Association will present a performance which will see a professional mourner in conversation with a young person interested in learning oppari, the ancient singing tradition of expressing grief during funerary rituals. The show is designed as a pedagogic interaction, in which the professional shares, recounts and performs in response to the question of whether mourning can ever take form as a productive practice.

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art is exhibiting around 185 works of Vadodara-based artist Surendran Nair, from the 1970s to the 1990s. The works, including drawings, prints and watercolours, trace Nair’s journey from his early years as a student at the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvananthapuram, and then at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Vadodara, Gujarat.

Artists Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane have selected more than 280 works, including drawings, paintings, films and handcrafted objects, which provide a snapshot of contemporary folk art in the UK. Some of the works have been created by prisoners, teenagers and villagers.

Directed by Vivek Madan, Stalowa Wola is based on a play of the same name by German author Christopher Kloeble. The play is about Karl, a middle-aged man living in Germany. Karl has been unfaithful to his wife and, just when he’s ready to come clean, she dies. Guilty and heartbroken, he drives off. En route, he encounters a host of colourful characters, including a cantankerous farmer, a shifty-eyed petrol pump attendant, and a girl with an affinity for chess.

Written by Anupama Chandrasekhar and directed by Mahesh Dattani, Free Outgoing is a play set in a gated community in Chennai where hard-working Malini has carefully charted her school-going children’s academic future. Soon, however, it all comes apart. The family becomes the centre of a media siege and public outrage, disrupting the community’s middle-class aspirations and daily water supply. As a youthful act turns into public fodder, friendships dissolve and family equations change. 1 hour, 40 minutes.

‘Anamika’, which combines theatre and three classical dances—Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi—explores the characters of three women whose lives were touched by the Hindu god Krishna.
