She led India to a clean sweep in women’s discus at the 2010 Games, becoming the first Indian woman to win a track-and-field gold at a CWG. Poonia went on to win a bronze at the Asian Games, but didn’t finish on the podium at the 2012 Olympics.

In 1999, she fought in the first official women’s boxing match in the country at the national games. Since then, she has won the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship four times, and the Women’s World Boxing Championship in 2005. She missed her chance to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, and is still fighting for recognition, making a comeback to the team after a year-long maternity lay-off.
